BNP senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed on Saturday stated that the people of Bangladesh remain united and determined to resist any attempts to undermine the upcoming national election and the country’s democratic transition.

Speaking at a milad and doa mahfil, Salahuddin, a member of the BNP standing committee, said, “Those casting doubts on the election through various anti-democracy statements are neither supporting democracy nor the people of Bangladesh.”

He warned that some groups are subtly attempting to delay, disrupt, or resist the electoral process. “But the people of Bangladesh are united and determined to exercise their right to vote. Anyone trying to obstruct the democratic journey will face the firm resolve of the people,” he added.

Salahuddin emphasized that the citizens are committed to overcoming any obstacles to ensure a smooth democratic transition in the days ahead.

The event, organized by Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, marked the 80th birthday of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Calling for solidarity among democratic political parties, Salahuddin urged them to unite as they did during the anti-fascist movement to guarantee a free, fair, and peaceful election. “Let all democratic forces come together, engage in dialogue, and work jointly to ensure a credible and peaceful election, thereby facilitating the path of democratic transition,” he said.

He noted that the BNP, under Khaleda Zia’s leadership, has been striving to strengthen democracy through dialogue and consensus. “Following her guidance, we have held multiple discussions with the government and continue to engage with all democratic forces,” he said.

Salahuddin highlighted the sacrifices made by many for democracy, saying, “We await the restoration of democracy for which our sons became martyrs, were injured, or blinded. For 16–17 years, we have waged an unceasing democratic struggle and continue to wait for its fulfillment.”

Referring to preparations for the national election, he noted that Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin recently indicated the polls are likely to be held in the first half of February.

He stressed that national unity is crucial to building a strong democratic state based on equality. “The unity we demonstrated against fascism must now become the true strength of the nation,” he said.

Salahuddin also praised Khaleda Zia’s lifelong dedication to democracy, from her efforts during the Liberation War to leading movements against military rule, restoring parliamentary democracy, and introducing the caretaker government system in 1996. “Khaleda Zia embodies both a name and a legacy. With a leader like her, the nation will not lose its way,” he said.

He concluded by praying for her long life as a guiding light for the people and a protector of democracy, independence, and national sovereignty.
