Tarique Rahman Warns of Obstacles to Democracy, Calls for People’s Accountability

BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, has emphasized that establishing a government accountable to the people is essential, and until such a government is formed, democracy remains vulnerable. He pointed out that the activities of sinister, unseen forces are becoming evident, with certain parties deliberately imposing conditions to obstruct the electoral process.

Rahman made these remarks while virtually attending a discussion on the BNP’s founding anniversary on Sunday, August 31.

He stressed that ensuring the people’s rights through practical democratic political practice is far more important than mere paper-based reforms. While the BNP supports reforms in the state and politics, he warned that any reform that obstructs the practice and implementation of citizens’ rights cannot be sustainable.

Rahman further said that the interim government formed in Bangladesh after the fall of the previous authoritarian regime represents the aspirations of the people. However, he noted, there is no reasonable expectation for this government to perform like a fully competent, accountable political administration. Consequently, the longer it remains in power, the more visible its weaknesses will become.

Addressing party activists, he remarked that BNP believes politics is not about empty promises, but about improving citizens’ lives and building a secure Bangladesh for future generations. In line with this goal, the BNP has undertaken various programs, which are now in the final stages of paperwork for implementation.

Cautioning about the upcoming elections, Tarique Rahman said numerous conspiracies are already being woven around the electoral process. He reaffirmed that BNP has never wavered in its commitment to democracy, justice, rule of law, and citizens’ rights—and will continue to uphold these principles in the future.
