BNP’s Mirza Abbas Alleges Attacks Are Aimed at Disrupting Elections

BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has claimed that recent incidents, including the attack on a shrine, are part of a broader effort to obstruct the upcoming national election.

“These are not isolated events. As polls approach, you will witness more such occurrences. There is a vested group that does not want the election to happen,” Abbas told reporters after visiting Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, who is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The BNP leader said he had listened to the speech of a major world leader online and felt that Bangladesh was not functioning under a normal democratic process. “The country is being run abnormally,” he remarked.

Condemning the attacks, including the one on Rajbari shrine, Abbas warned that the government risked appearing to have “lost control” if it failed to trace the masterminds.

Describing the assault on Nur as “inhumane,” he added, “Only Allah knows his internal condition. From what I observed, blood is still coming from his nose, and his state does not look good.”

On reports that the government might send Nur abroad for advanced treatment, Abbas expressed dissatisfaction that no such step had been taken yet.

Gono Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan echoed concerns, saying Nur’s condition has shown no significant improvement. He alleged that, despite assurances, the authorities were unnecessarily delaying arrangements for treatment abroad.

Rashed also denied any involvement of his party’s leaders or supporters in Friday’s attack on the Jatiya Party office.
