Tarique Rahman Urges BNP Activists to Continue Movement Until Democracy is Restored

BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has called on party leaders and activists to continue their struggle until the democratic rights of the people are fully re-established.

Speaking virtually on Monday as the chief guest at the biennial council of Thakurgaon district BNP, Tarique said:

“The upcoming national election will not be as easy as some may think. Let us pledge today that until the democratic rights of the people are guaranteed, until Bangladesh returns to the path of democracy, our movement will not stop.”

The council was held at Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School ground, with district BNP vice-president and freedom fighter Nur Karim presiding.

Warning Against Instability

Referring to recent political statements, Tarique said every party has the right to speak in a democratic system, but cautioned that remarks leading to chaos or creating opportunities for the return of dictatorship would not be healthy for the nation or its democracy.

He urged party members to remain alert:
“Some forces may try to obstruct the people’s demand for democracy. Just as you stood united against autocracy in the past, you must now keep the people together. That mission is not yet complete.”

Commitment to Peaceful Politics

Calling BNP the country’s largest political party, Tarique said:
“Our duty is to resist any threat to democracy—but in a way that people accept. We will never take decisions that destroy peace or order in society.”

He reminded activists of the sacrifices behind Bangladesh’s birth and its democratic struggles:
“This country was built through the sacrifice of millions in 1971, and many more suffered in later movements for democracy. We must remain vigilant so that the fruits of democracy reach the people.”

Other Leaders’ Remarks

In the second session, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir accused conspirators of plotting against Bangladesh’s democracy at a time when the nation is eager for elections and a return to democratic governance.

Thanking interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus for announcing the next national polls in early February 2026, Fakhrul said:
“Our fight is not over. We must remain alert and move forward toward the goal of establishing a truly democratic state.”

BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, organizing secretary Asadul Habib Dulu, joint organizing secretaries Abdul Khalek and Aminul Islam, and district BNP general secretary Mirza Faisal Amin also spoke at the event.
