Air pollution is rising in many cities around the world due to factors like climate change, and Dhaka, as a megacity, has long been affected. Though often ranked among the top ten most polluted cities globally, recent rainfall has brought a slight improvement in Dhaka’s air quality. However, Lahore is currently facing a severe pollution crisis. On Thursday, April 24, Dhaka’s air remained unhealthy for sensitive groups, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 126 at around 8:57 a.m., placing it 14th among the world’s most polluted cities, according to data from IQAir. In contrast, Lahore topped the list with a hazardous score of 273, followed by Baghdad (239), Delhi (204), Kathmandu (182), and Shanghai (163). AQI scores between 0–50 are considered good, 51–100 moderate, and 101–150 unhealthy for sensitive groups. Scores from 151–200 are categorized as unhealthy, while 201–300 are very unhealthy, prompting warnings for children, the elderly, and the ill to stay indoors. AQI levels above 300 are deemed hazardous, posing serious health risks to the general population.
