Heat peaks in Dhaka as temperature hits seasonal high

As the Bengali month of Boishakh nears its end, a sweltering heatwave continues to grip much of Bangladesh, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a three-day heat alert. Several regions are experiencing intense heat stress, pushing daily life to its limits. Dhaka recorded its highest temperature of the season on Saturday, May 10, reaching 40.1°C.
Meanwhile, Chuadanga registered the country’s highest temperature at a scorching 42°C. Apart from Sylhet, Sunamganj, and nearby areas, temperatures in many parts of the country have surpassed 40°C. Forecasts suggest the heatwave may persist for at least another day.
On Friday, May 9, Chuadanga also held the record for the season’s highest temperature at 41.2°C, which rose further the next day. In comparison, Dhaka’s temperature on Friday reached 39.2°C.
Other districts faced similar extremes: Jessore saw 40.2°C, Rajshahi hit 40.7°C, Aricha in Manikganj reached 40°C, while both Faridpur and Tangail recorded temperatures above 40°C as well.
Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana noted that much of the country remained above the 40°C mark and warned the heat could continue. However, brief rain or thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds, may occur in isolated areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, offering some relief.
