The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested Masud Biswas, the former head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), with the assistance of the Detective Branch (DB) of the police. According to ACC sources, he was apprehended on Saturday and will be presented in court under charges of amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.
The ACC filed a case against Biswas on January 2, accusing him of acquiring illegal assets worth over BDT 18.7 million. Investigations revealed properties and flats in various parts of Dhaka registered under his and his wife’s names. Following allegations of corruption, money laundering, and disproportionate wealth acquisition, the ACC launched a probe on September 25 last year, forming a four-member investigation team led by Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar.
According to the case details, Biswas illegally acquired and retained assets totaling BDT 18,772,622, which constitutes a punishable offense under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act, 2004, and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947. Additionally, a notice was issued under Section 26(1) of the ACC Act, 2004, against his wife, Kamrun Nahar, for holding unexplained assets worth BDT 7,256,999.
