The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, has ordered the suspension of the High Court’s bail granted to 61 pro-Awami League lawyers accused in a case involving the assault and attempted murder of fellow lawyers during the July uprising. The court also instructed the disposal of the rule issued regarding their bail within two weeks.

Earlier, on April 29, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Md. Rezaul Haque, had temporarily halted the High Court’s bail order until May 5 and forwarded the matter to the regular bench for a full hearing.

The 61 accused lawyers had been sent to jail on April 6 by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md. Zakir Hossain, following their involvement in the case. They later appealed to the High Court for bail.
