Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Special Envoy of the Chief Advisor on Rohingya Issues, met with Ambassador Dennis Francis, President of the UN General Assembly, in New York. The discussion emphasized the urgent need for the swift repatriation of forcibly displaced Rohingya.

According to a statement from Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the UN, issued on Tuesday, December 31, the meeting focused on the framework and objectives of the upcoming 2025 international conference on the Rohingya crisis, as outlined in a consensus resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly this year.

The idea for such a conference was initially proposed by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus during his address to the UN General Assembly in September 2024, with the aim of finding a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the crisis.

During the meeting, Dr. Rahman conveyed Bangladesh’s willingness to fully support the UN in organizing the conference and highlighted the significant international interest it has already garnered. He also briefed the UN on recent regional political developments and reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to engaging all stakeholders in a collaborative effort for the sustainable repatriation of the displaced Rohingya population.

Ambassador Francis commended Bangladesh for its active role at the UN and pledged full support for broad participation in the conference, aiming for a practical and peaceful resolution to the crisis. He also expressed interest in closely collaborating on the event’s organization.
