Nahid Islam, one of the prominent student leaders who marched at the forefront during the student-people uprising, is currently serving as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting. In a recent interview with a media outlet, he shared his views on the country’s current situation and addressed the possibility of banning the Awami League for its alleged involvement in acts of genocide.

When asked about the Awami League, Nahid Islam remarked, “Through indiscriminate killings during the student-people movement, the Awami League has lost its moral right to engage in politics. Not only must they face justice, but they must also seek forgiveness from the people. They have neither the right nor the opportunity to remain active before facing accountability.”

The Minister of Information further emphasized that the government is accountable not to any political party but to the aspirations of the people. Regarding the pressure from the BNP for early elections, he stated that the government would proceed toward elections only based on the work of the Reform Commission.

On press freedom, Nahid Islam mentioned that the government is reviewing laws that hinder media independence. He added, “We aim to create a framework that addresses economic, political, and security concerns, ensuring that people can practice journalism freely and without obstacles.”

He also noted that the commission formed to reform the media sector would establish laws preventing any future interference or authoritarian control over the press.

Addressing the challenges faced by the interim government after the uprising, Nahid Islam acknowledged the ongoing wave of demands from various groups. He said, “While some demands are legitimate, not all are justified. There might even be conspiracies lurking behind certain demands.”
