BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has stated that the Awami League should not be allowed to continue political activities under its current name in Bangladesh. He emphasized that the party should be held accountable for its involvement in genocide and crimes against humanity, calling for legal actions to be taken against it as a political organization.
During a discussion titled “National Unity and the Current Reality” at the National Press Club, he criticized the interim government for its contradictory stance. While acknowledging the desire to prevent the Awami League’s political activities, Salahuddin questioned the lack of legal steps to ban the party, despite its past actions. He called for reforms in the International Crimes Tribunal Act to address these issues and to determine whether Awami League should be permitted to continue its political operations.
Salahuddin further stressed the importance of democratic reforms to ensure the removal of fascist elements from the political landscape and a shift towards a constitutionally-driven political government. He also raised concerns about the independence of the judiciary, suggesting that a true reform of the system could only occur if the existing judiciary, including certain judges, were removed.
