The film Anora, directed by Sean Baker, blends love, dreams, and reality. It tells the story of Vanya, the son of a Russian gangster, and Anora, an American stripper. The narrative begins with Vanya visiting America, where a bar owner assigns Anora, who speaks Russian, to entertain him. Anora, whose real name is Annie, is not only a dancer but also a sex worker. Over time, Vanya and Anora form a bond, and he proposes marriage to her, which she agrees to despite her initial surprise. After their wedding, Anora decides to leave her past behind, but Vanya’s family disapproves. Vanya’s father sends two men, Garnik and Igor, to America to confront the couple. When they find Anora, Vanya panics and abandons her. After a violent confrontation, it is revealed that Vanya’s father has been handling such incidents for him in the past. The film culminates with a divorce, as Vanya’s family intervenes, and Anora begins to find comfort in Igor, who shows a softer side. The movie highlights the harsh truths of reality, illustrating the stark contrast between fantasy and real life, and the struggles of a sex worker trying to escape her past. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Actress for Mikey Madison as Anora.
