A recent attack on Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commission in Agartala by extremist Hindutva groups has escalated tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi. The attackers vandalized the premises and desecrated Bangladesh’s national flag, actions that Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned as a violation of the Vienna Convention.
The incident has drawn international attention, with the U.S. State Department acknowledging the matter. During a press briefing, spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the United States expects Bangladesh and India to resolve their disputes peacefully. Responding to a journalist’s question, Miller expressed hope for all parties to address disagreements through non-violent means.
The attack occurred amidst protests organized by a group under the banner of the Hindu Sangharsh Samiti. The protesters denounced alleged mistreatment of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh and demanded the release of ISKCON member Chinmoy Krishna Das. These demonstrations turned violent, leading to significant damage at the diplomatic mission.
The events have sparked diplomatic concern, particularly as India’s Foreign Secretary recently visited Bangladesh. Both nations have expressed unease over the growing aggression and rhetoric, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peaceful relations.
