Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan has announced that he will run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election from Dhaka-10.
He shared the declaration on his verified Facebook page today at 11:51 AM, adding a video message and requesting the public’s support and cooperation.
Dhaka-10 constituency covers Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, New Market, and Hazaribagh areas. The BNP has nominated its executive committee member Sheikh Robiul Alam for this seat, while Jamaat-e-Islami has selected Supreme Court lawyer Jasim Uddin Sarkar. The National Citizen Party (NCP) has not yet announced a candidate.
Recently, Asif Mahmud and Mahfuz Alam resigned from their positions as advisers to the interim government. They submitted their resignations to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday at the state guest house Jamuna. Their resignations became effective upon the announcement of the election and referendum schedules on Thursday evening.
The Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin declared that voting in all 300 constituencies will be held on February 12 next year. A national referendum on implementing the July Charter will also take place the same day.
Both Asif Mahmud and Mahfuz Alam served in the interim government as representatives of the student leaders who played key roles in the July mass uprising. Asif oversaw the Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry, as well as the Youth and Sports Ministry. Mahfuz Alam was responsible for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Asif had previously indicated that he intended to run from Dhaka. On November 9, he applied to change his voter registration to Dhanmondi, which sparked speculation about his candidacy. Today, he officially confirmed his independent run for Dhaka-10 via his Facebook announcement.
Meanwhile, Mahfuz Alam is also preparing to participate in the upcoming election. His brother Mahbub Alam, joint convener of NCP, told the media that Mahfuz plans to contest from Lakshmipur-1, although his party affiliation for the election is yet to be finalized.
