The Home Affairs Advisor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, announced that a new investigation committee will be formed within the next five working days to ensure justice for the BDR massacre at Pilkhana. He made this statement on Tuesday morning during a special press briefing held at the Ministry of Home Affairs conference room.
The advisor emphasized the interim government’s commitment to re-investigating the massacre and ensuring justice. He noted that since assuming responsibility, he has consistently called for justice and transparency regarding the incident. Earlier, he had made similar public statements on September 2 at the Home Ministry and again on November 4 during his visit to the BGB headquarters.
Jahangir Alam clarified that his advocacy for justice stems not just from his role as a government advisor but also as a concerned citizen and former military officer. He reiterated the interim government’s broader agenda to establish an equitable society with good governance, justice, and the protection of public rights.
The newly formed committee will include retired judges, civil servants, and former members of the armed forces and police. While the exact number of committee members is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to consist of five, seven, or nine individuals, with a heavier representation from the military.
When asked whether the investigation would lead to a formal re-investigation, the advisor explained that only the courts could issue such an order. The government, however, has the authority to initiate a preliminary inquiry or fact-finding investigation.
On the timeframe for submitting the report, Jahangir Alam stated that the initial priority is to finalize committee appointments, which can take time as not everyone agrees to participate. Once members are confirmed, the committee will establish its scope and timeline for delivering findings.
Regarding the leadership of the committee, he confirmed that the most senior member will preside over the process. Whether the body will function as a “committee” or a formal “commission” will depend on subsequent discussions and requirements.
The advisor dismissed any confusion with the Law Ministry, affirming that collaboration with legal advisors will occur as necessary to ensure a smooth and effective process.
