Bangladesh Interim Government Vows to Hold Elections in First Half of February

The interim government of Bangladesh has reaffirmed its determination to hold the 13th parliamentary elections before 15 February 2026, press secretary Shafiqul Alam said on Saturday outside the Chief Adviser’s residence, Jamuna.

“We are firmly committed to holding the elections in the first half of February. No force can prevent this,” Alam told reporters.

When questioned about the suitability of conducting polls amid political instability, he highlighted police statistics on law and order, stating that the environment is adequate for elections to proceed as scheduled.

The Election Commission has also released a roadmap, indicating that the official election schedule will be announced in the first half of December 2025, with voting to take place in February 2026.

Condemnation of Attack on Nurul Haque Nur

Separately, the interim government strongly condemned the recent attack on Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad and a key figure in the July mass uprising.

A press statement described the assault as not only an attack on Nurul Haque Nur but also on the spirit of Bangladesh’s democratic movement. The government assured that a full, impartial investigation will be carried out, and no individual involved, regardless of influence or rank, will escape accountability.

A specialized medical board has been formed to monitor the health of Nurul Haque Nur and other injured party members. The government confirmed that if needed, patients will be sent abroad for treatment at state expense.

The statement called on all political and social forces involved in the July uprising to unite in protecting the achievements of the democratic struggle, resist anti-people conspiracies, and ensure a successful transition to democracy.

“The prayers and solidarity of the nation are with Nurul Haque Nur, the injured members of his party, and their families during this critical time,” the statement added.
