The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh is currently investigating polling stations where 100% voter turnout was reported during the 2018 national elections. To identify the officials involved in these irregularities, the ACC has formally requested information from the Election Commission.
Sources within the ACC revealed on Monday (June 23) that they have already obtained several documents related to certain officials. Alongside the election fraud investigation, the ACC is also looking into the illegal accumulation of wealth by those involved.
The inquiry into the alleged vote manipulation, often referred to as “the midnight vote,” began in January this year. According to ACC allegations, under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina and the overall coordination of Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, leaders and activists across different levels of the ruling party executed the midnight voting scheme. The operation was allegedly supported by top law enforcement officials at the time, including former Inspector Generals of Police Javed Patwary and Shahidul Haque, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, former RAB chief Benazir Ahmed, as well as Sheikh Hasina’s Defence Advisor Tarique Ahmed Siddique and former Public Administration Advisor HT Imam. Various government and election commission officials were also reportedly involved in facilitating the process.
