The BNP has now specified a timeline for elections, requesting urgent reforms from the interim government, and has proposed July-August as a feasible period for the national elections. During a recent press conference, the party stated that mid-year would be a reasonable time to hold the 13th National Parliament elections. Previously, the ruling government suggested that elections could take place either in December of this year or in June of next year. In the wake of the political changes following Sheikh Hasina’s downfall in an August 5th uprising, at least 11 commissions have been formed to address necessary reforms, with their recommendations expected this month. In response, the BNP argues that the government is attempting to delay the national elections by prioritizing local elections, which would exacerbate the political and economic crises.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized that discussions within the party concluded that there is no reason to delay the elections further. With the Election Commission formed and a relative sense of political stability, he argued, the delay in elections would only worsen the country’s challenges. Although some BNP leaders acknowledge the risks posed by monsoon rains in July-August, they believe it is crucial to hold the elections without postponing them into the next year. The party has demanded that talks with the government lead to an agreement on a specific date, but insists it must happen within this year.

According to BNP sources, the demand for a July-August election is part of strategic negotiations to put pressure on the government while clarifying its stance. The party believes that delaying elections will only increase uncertainty and hinder the country’s democratic progress. The current interim government has stated its preference for local elections, but the BNP insists that the primary focus should be on national elections, arguing that local government elections do not address the country’s governance needs. Mirza Fakhrul reiterated that voter list updates and necessary preparations for the national election are feasible within a short time frame, and the Election Commission has confirmed that it is ready to organize the elections. He urged that elections be held quickly for the sake of the nation’s democratic future.
