BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman urged the government to avoid delaying the election under the pretext of taking too much time for reforms. In a virtual address during a workshop, he emphasized that elections are the most effective way to implement state-overhauling proposals from elected representatives promptly.

Tarique warned that if the elections were delayed due to prolonged discussions on reforms, it would lead the country into a deep crisis, and the fallen autocratic forces could make a comeback. He stated that while discussions on reforms are ongoing, BNP has always supported them but insisted that elections are essential for enacting those reforms.

He explained that candidates running in the election must promise to implement the proposed reforms if given the opportunity to govern. According to Tarique, only those elected by the people have the mandate to initiate reforms, and any further delay in elections would only prolong the process of reform implementation.

Tarique highlighted the importance of elections as a means to protect the country and its citizens, stressing that accountability could only be ensured through elections. While acknowledging that not all problems would be solved immediately by elections, he argued that elected leaders would gradually address the country’s issues.

He also cautioned that extending discussions on reforms would provide an opportunity for conspirators to plot, which could destabilize the country further. Tarique called for an end to lengthy discussions and urged respected individuals to avoid further delays in the election process.

Furthermore, Tarique reaffirmed that if BNP is voted into power, the party would fulfill its reform promises, focusing on issues like affordable commodity prices, fair prices for agricultural goods, and quality education and healthcare. He also mentioned that addressing traffic congestion and pollution in Dhaka would be a priority for BNP if they return to power. However, he noted that resolving civic issues requires the active participation of the people.

Tarique criticized the current government, alleging that it destroyed institutions and misused public funds in the name of development due to a lack of accountability. He stressed the need for free and fair elections to ensure good governance and restore people’s rights, as BNP leaders and activists have long fought for these rights. He concluded by emphasizing that regular elections at all levels are essential for ensuring proper governance and accountability.
