A court in Jashore has acquitted BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, in a sedition case. The verdict was delivered on Monday, March 10, by District and Sessions Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam.
According to Public Prosecutor and district BNP president Advocate Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, the case was filed on January 22, 2015, by Jashore District Awami League’s organizational secretary, Afzal Hossain. The complaint alleged that Tarique Rahman made derogatory and defamatory remarks against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which were deemed seditious. Following a court directive, Jashore Kotwali police investigated the matter and submitted a charge sheet against Rahman on April 21, 2015.
After nine years of proceedings, the court ruled that the charges against Tarique Rahman could not be proven, leading to his acquittal.
