BNP leader Amanullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman have been acquitted in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). On Wednesday, April 30, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Senior Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam—acting Chief Justice—delivered the verdict. The Supreme Court accepted their appeal against the previous conviction, overturning the High Court’s ruling that had upheld the sentences. According to their lawyer, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, the couple is now legally eligible to participate in future elections. The case, filed in 2007 at Dhaka’s Kafrul Police Station, accused them of concealing information and acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income. Aman was initially sentenced to 13 years in prison, while Sabera received a 3-year term from a special judge’s court on June 21, 2007. The Appellate Division has now cleared both of all charges.
