BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, has called for urgent measures to ensure that no family members in Bangladesh fall victim to enforced disappearances under state patronage. On the occasion of International Week Against Enforced Disappearances, he urged the government to take a strong role in ending such inhumane acts. Tarique described enforced disappearances as a grave violation of human rights and expressed solidarity with the families of the disappeared. Citing official data, he stated that between 2009 and March 2024, approximately 666 individuals have been forcibly disappeared at the hands of law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh, with many still missing, some found dead, and a few later shown to have been arrested. He condemned these incidents as brutal examples of misrule during the current Awami League government and called on all relevant parties to remain vigilant to prevent any further occurrences.
