Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) aims to build a “Rainbow State” by including groups with differing political views, said party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday (20 July) during a discussion at Chandrima Udyan, held in memory of the martyrs of the July uprising.

“We believe in diversity of opinions,” Fakhrul said. “Our goal is to create a Rainbow State, where people with different political beliefs will be united under one democratic framework.”

The term “Rainbow State” is originally associated with post-apartheid South Africa, symbolizing peaceful coexistence among people of various races and cultures.

Addressing the party’s next steps following the July uprising, Fakhrul announced that the BNP will establish a special fund to support those injured during the movement.

On the topic of past abductions and killings, he fiercely criticized Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, declaring, “Fascist Hasina can never be forgiven. She is a disgrace to humanity.”

He further remarked, “We won’t argue over how many lives were lost from which party during the July movement. What matters is the collective sacrifice for democracy.”

Fakhrul also expressed hope that under the leadership of BNP’s chief advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh would transition to democracy through a national election expected by February.

Later, at the same event, the BNP leader launched a tree-planting campaign by planting saplings at Chandrima Udyan, initiating a countrywide goal of planting one million trees.
