In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera’s global leaders’ talk show, “Talk to Al Jazeera,” Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, announced that the trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the July-August genocide case will begin in early May. He mentioned that the United Nations’ investigation report had already proven her involvement in the crimes. Dr. Yunus also added that a request had been made to India to extradite Sheikh Hasina, although no official response had been received yet.

Dr. Yunus reiterated that national elections will be held between December and June of the following year. He emphasized the importance of a fair, impartial election and stressed that reforms, if minor, would allow the elections to take place by December, but if the reforms were extensive, they would be postponed until June next year.

Regarding the ongoing Rohingya crisis, he asserted that the solution lies in safe repatriation, not just humanitarian aid. He clarified that the interim government is working closely with international organizations, including the United Nations, to ensure the safe return of refugees.

Dr. Yunus also addressed questions on whether the interim government’s “honeymoon period” had ended, acknowledging that while challenges persist, the people of Bangladesh still see the interim government as the best solution for the country. He further stated that despite political voids, the interim government is committed to organizing free and fair elections, with the people not demanding an immediate transfer of power.

On the issue of the Awami League’s participation in the upcoming elections, he stated that the party must make its own decision. He also clarified that while the Election Commission would have a role in the process, other political parties could argue that under certain laws, the Awami League may not be able to participate.

Finally, Dr. Yunus recalled his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Thailand, where Modi reportedly asked him to keep Sheikh Hasina “quiet,” to which Modi admitted he could not control her social media actions.

In terms of international relations, Dr. Yunus emphasized the desire for Bangladesh to collaborate with countries like the U.S., India, Pakistan, and China, adopting a cooperative approach for mutual progress.
