In an interview with Al Jazeera, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, revealed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi admitted he could not silence former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India. The interview, aired on April 27, discussed several key issues, including the July Revolution, upcoming elections, Hasina’s stay in India, and corruption under the former government.
Dr. Yunus explained that during a meeting with Modi at the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok, he made it clear that while he couldn’t do anything about Hasina’s presence in India, she should refrain from making statements as they stir up trouble in Bangladesh. He emphasized that her remarks fuel unrest among the people and cause difficulties for the interim government.
When asked about Modi’s response, Dr. Yunus shared that the Indian Prime Minister stated that India is a country where social media is open to everyone, and he couldn’t control Hasina’s statements.
Regarding the timing of the national elections, Dr. Yunus assured that if political parties agree to a “short reform package,” the elections could be held in December. However, if a more extensive reform package is needed, the elections would be postponed until June of the following year.
