Stressing the importance of a free and fair election, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus said the pre-election period can be quite turbulent and that law enforcement must remain vigilant to prevent destabilizing attempts by defeated forces. Speaking at the inaugural session of Police Week at Rajarbagh Police Lines on Tuesday (April 29), he noted that over the past 15 years, the police had been used as a political tool, causing even honest officers to suffer public outrage due to carrying out unlawful directives.

He acknowledged improvements in law and order following the fall of autocratic rule and said the interim government is working to strengthen the police institutionally. Highlighting the need for public trust, Dr. Yunus emphasized bridging the gap between citizens and police, created during previous regimes.

He urged the force to be highly sensitive in tackling violence against women and children, stressing that real national progress depends on ensuring their security. “We are dreaming of a just and equal Bangladesh—what I call a ‘second Bangladesh’—and the July uprising gave us that opportunity. If we fail now, history will hold us accountable,” he warned.

Dr. Yunus added that the upcoming national election, scheduled for December this year or June next year, must be credible. He called on the police to ensure an environment where all candidates are treated fairly and citizens can vote without fear. He concluded by saying that preventing the misuse of the police in future regimes hinges on holding a truly fair election and safeguarding national stability during this critical period.
