Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged all citizens to maintain unity and cooperation in the ongoing journey to build a new, inequality-free Bangladesh, inspired by the collective uprising of students, workers, and the general public. In a statement issued on Thursday, May 1, marking both International Workers’ Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day 2025, he expressed solidarity with working people across the world and pride in Bangladesh’s observance of the day with due dignity.

Reflecting on the history of May Day, Dr. Yunus noted the global recognition of labor rights that began with the bloodshed of workers at Chicago’s Haymarket on May 1, 1886, in their struggle for an 8-hour workday and fair wages. He paid deep respect to those who sacrificed their lives for workers’ rights and described May Day as a continuing source of inspiration for justice and dignity in labor.

He emphasized the critical role of healthy worker-employer relations in driving the national economy forward. Referring to this year’s May Day theme, “Workers and Employers Together—Building a New Nation,” he highlighted its significance for sustainable development. He stressed that workers and employers are complementary forces, and only through their joint efforts can Bangladesh become strong, self-reliant, and prosperous.

Dr. Yunus acknowledged the tireless contribution of workers and employers across sectors—garments, agriculture, industry, construction, transport, and technology. He reiterated the importance of unity following the mass uprising of students, workers, and citizens in July–August, which symbolizes the push toward a more just and equal society.

He also noted that alongside May Day, the country is observing National Occupational Health and Safety Day 2025, reaffirming a national commitment to ensuring safe, healthy, and dignified working conditions. He emphasized that improving the lives and welfare of workers is essential for industrial growth and economic progress. In conclusion, he expressed his belief that true national development can only be accelerated through shared responsibility and partnership between workers and employers.
