US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “not particularly happy” with him over the tariffs Washington imposed on New Delhi for purchasing oil from Russia.
Speaking at a conference with Republican members of the House of Representatives, Trump recalled, “Prime Minister Modi came to meet me. He said, ‘Sir, may I have a moment to speak with you?’ I said, ‘Yes.’”
Trump added, “I have a very good relationship with him. But he’s not too pleased with me. You know, they are now facing a lot of tariffs because they didn’t stop buying oil from Russia. Though, of course, they have significantly reduced their purchases from Russia.”
The US currently imposes a 50 percent tariff on India, half of which is a penalty related to oil imports from Russia.
Trump also noted that India had been waiting for five years to receive Apache helicopters. “We are changing that situation,” he said, adding that India has now placed an order for 68 Apache helicopters.
