Israel plans to enforce security restrictions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City during Ramadan, according to government spokesperson David Mencer in an online briefing on Thursday, as reported by Anadolu Agency.
Last year, during the Gaza war, Israel imposed strict entry bans, particularly on Palestinians from the West Bank. Mencer stated that standard security measures would remain in place for public safety. Age restrictions on entry may be reintroduced, as seen last year when only men over 55 and women over 50 were allowed access. Additionally, heavy police security was implemented throughout the Old City.
Hinting at heightened precautions this year, Mencer warned that any attempt at violence or incitement would be firmly countered, though he did not disclose specific security measures.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is a symbol of Palestinian national identity, and while Jews are allowed to enter, they are prohibited from praying there. The Israeli government claims it seeks to maintain the site’s status quo, but Palestinians fear these restrictions infringe on their religious rights and may further escalate tensions.
