Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has issued a statement regarding the recent meeting between BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Adviser of the interim government Dr. Muhammad Yunus in London. In the statement, signed by Motiur Rahman Akand, Secretary of Jamaat’s Central Publicity and Media Division, the party described the meeting as a normal occurrence, noting that Dr. Yunus has previously held discussions with various political parties, both individually and jointly.
However, Jamaat expressed reservations about holding a joint press briefing and issuing a joint statement abroad, arguing that such practices do not align with Bangladesh’s political traditions. They suggested that this approach could give the impression of favoritism toward a particular party, potentially calling the Chief Adviser’s neutrality into question.
The statement further noted that after announcing a roadmap for the next national election—tentatively scheduled for the first half of April 2026—Dr. Yunus should have returned to Bangladesh and engaged in dialogue with other political parties before making further public remarks.
Jamaat emphasized that it is not appropriate to make political decisions based on discussions with just one party while many other parties remain active in the political landscape. They stressed the importance of creating a neutral and credible environment for free and fair elections.
The party also referenced comments made by Jamaat’s Ameer, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, who, following a meeting with a foreign diplomat in April, had shared the expectation that the next election might take place before Ramadan 2026, possibly as early as February.
In conclusion, Jamaat’s Executive Council urged the government to clarify the Chief Adviser’s role to address growing public doubts and to take meaningful steps to ensure an impartial and widely acceptable electoral process.
