Mass Gathering Heats Up Suhrawardy as Jamaat’s National Rally Continues

A large national rally organized by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has begun at Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan, with the party presenting a seven-point charter of demands. The main program officially kicked off around 2:15 PM on Saturday, following a recitation from the Holy Qur’an. Jamaat’s Secretary General, Golam Parwar, is overseeing the proceedings.

 

Party leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman arrived at the venue at approximately 12:15 PM. The initial segment of the rally began earlier in the day at 9:40 AM with cultural performances.

 

A massive turnout has been witnessed at the rally. Supporters and activists from across the country began arriving at the venue since Friday evening. By Saturday morning, thousands had joined processions leading to the site.

 

By 10:00 AM, Suhrawardy Udyan was filled to capacity, prompting many to occupy the surrounding areas. Jamaat supporters were also seen gathered in key nearby locations, including Shahbagh, Dhaka University, Doel Square, the High Court area, Matsya Bhaban, Kakrail, Banglamotor, and Science Lab.

 

The seven-point demand list includes:

 

  • Ensuring a level playing field for holding free, fair, impartial, and peaceful elections

 

  • Justice for all mass killings

 

  • Major structural and constitutional reforms

 

  • Implementation of the “July Charter” and its declarations

 

  • Rehabilitation of families of those killed or injured in the July uprising

 

  • Adoption of a proportional representation (PR) system for national elections

 

  • Protection of voting rights for over one crore (10 million) Bangladeshi expatriates
