If all goes according to plan, Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) could host an India vs Bangladesh match in Sylhet, hometown of Hamza Choudhury, by the end of this year. Hamza, who plays in the English league, made his debut for Bangladesh on March 25 in Shillong, India, where the match ended in a goalless draw but Hamza impressed with his performance.

Hamza received a hero’s welcome when he arrived in Sylhet on March 17, traveling from the airport to his ancestral home in Snanghat, Bahubal upazila of Habiganj. Although local fans got the chance to see him then, they didn’t see him play live. However, that dream might come true soon. Bangladesh is planning to host India at Sylhet District Stadium on November 18.

The next Asian Cup qualifying match for Bangladesh is scheduled against Singapore on June 10, likely at the National Stadium. On October 9, Bangladesh will face Hong Kong at Chattogram District Stadium. Then in November, they aim to bring India to Sylhet.

Speaking to the media on Saturday (April 26) at BFF House, Competition Committee member Iqbal Hossain said, “We are planning to host two international matches — one in Sylhet and the other in Chattogram. I visited Sylhet’s stadium last Friday. The condition is good, although the grass is a bit long as no league matches are currently being played. With some minor renovations, it will be ready.”

Sylhet District Stadium has previously hosted three international friendlies: against Mongolia in 2022 and two matches against Seychelles the following year.

If Hamza gets to play in front of his home crowd in Sylhet, a large turnout is expected. With another local talent, Samit Som, potentially joining the squad, the stadium could be packed to the brim.

Iqbal added, “In past matches at Sylhet, we saw great crowd support. If players like Hamza and Samit are on the field, it will be even more special for Sylhet fans.”
