Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said that, as head of government, his greatest source of strength comes from the trust and support of the people. He urged members of the Special Security Force (SSF) to ensure that security arrangements do not create unnecessary barriers between national leaders and citizens.
Speaking at an event marking the 40th anniversary of the SSF at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Thursday, he emphasized that while the protection of key state figures must remain a top priority, security personnel should also be careful to treat the public with respect and professionalism.
Rahman noted that the security environment has changed significantly since the force was established. Rapid technological advancement, shifting geopolitical realities, and evolving social and political conditions have introduced increasingly complex security threats. To address these challenges, he stressed the importance of continuous training, modernization, and the adoption of advanced security practices.
Reflecting on the force’s history, the prime minister said the organization was created four decades ago to meet the country’s security needs and later began operating under the name SSF in 1991. He extended his greetings and appreciation to all current and former members of the force.
He also praised the SSF’s contributions during former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s years in office and during her final period of medical treatment, describing the force’s service as dedicated and professional. According to Rahman, the SSF also played a major coordinating role in the arrangements surrounding her funeral prayers, which drew an exceptionally large gathering.
The prime minister said he has long been familiar with the force’s operations, dating back to his youth when Khaleda Zia served as head of government. Following the BNP’s victory in the February 12 national election and the formation of the current administration, the SSF assumed responsibility for providing security to the prime minister in accordance with state procedures.
Rahman added that he had reduced the size of his official motorcade to help ease traffic congestion and minimize inconvenience to the public. Given current realities, he said, improving operational efficiency and security strategies is more important than simply increasing personnel numbers.
He highlighted the challenge of maintaining security during large public gatherings and official events across the country. In such situations, the SSF must strike a balance between protecting national leaders and allowing citizens to go about their daily lives with minimal disruption.
The prime minister also expressed confidence that the force’s newly constructed modern firing range would strengthen professional skills and improve operational readiness. He encouraged members to make full use of the facility.
Rahman stressed the importance of following the updated SSF “Red Book,” which has been revised to better reflect modern security requirements while also providing a clear operational framework and legal guidance.
He further stated that courage, integrity, loyalty, professionalism, and strict adherence to the chain of command are essential qualities for every member of a specialized security force. Ensuring the safety of the head of state, the head of government, and other designated high-profile individuals, he said, is closely linked to national security.
The prime minister underscored the importance of coordination between the SSF, intelligence agencies, law enforcement bodies, and relevant ministries, noting that stronger cooperation leads to more effective security outcomes.
He concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the SSF through training, technology, and institutional support, and expressed confidence that its members would continue to serve with professionalism, patriotism, and respect for democratic values.
