Parliament Session Set to Begin Thursday as Key Bills and Permanent Committees Take Center Stage

Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliament is set to begin its third session on Thursday, with lawmakers expected to deliberate on a series of significant legislative proposals, establish parliamentary standing committees, and debate pressing national issues ranging from law and order to energy shortages. Government Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni indicated that the session is likely to be brief but consequential, focusing on the passage of several important bills while providing space for discussions on matters raised by opposition parties. Parliamentary sources said proposed legislation expected to be introduced includes reforms related to the National Human Rights Commission, prevention of enforced disappearances, property transfer regulations, banking resolution mechanisms, and the creation of a new Special Response Battalion under police oversight. Opposition lawmakers are also expected to challenge the government on public concerns including gas and electricity shortages, economic pressures, and allegations of politically influenced appointments within state institutions. Authorities have tightened security around the National Parliament complex, imposing restrictions on public gatherings in surrounding areas to ensure smooth proceedings. Officials said the session could continue until mid-September, ahead of Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman’s planned participation in the United Nations General Assembly in New York later this month.
