Bangladesh reached the Super Four of the Women’s U-19 Asia Cup after defeating Sri Lanka and Malaysia, but their journey began with a disappointing eight-wicket loss to India.
In the previous match, Bangladesh bowled out Malaysia for just 29 runs, securing a massive 120-run victory. However, they couldn’t carry that momentum forward. Despite the loss, Bangladesh retained two points from their earlier win against Sri Lanka in the group stage. This means a win against Nepal in their final Super Four match will secure them a place in the final.
Playing at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Bangladesh managed only 80 runs for eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs. The opening partnership between Fahmida Chhoa and MST Eva was promising, contributing 27 runs in 5.2 overs. However, the collapse began in the sixth over, triggered by India’s left-arm spinner Ayushi Shukla, who removed both Eva (14 off 19 balls) and Fahmida (10 off 14 balls) in the same over. From 27/0, Bangladesh slumped to 46/7 by the 14th over. Contributions from Farzana Yasmin (8 off 21), Nishita Akter (10 off 17), and Habiba Islam (11 off 4) helped push the total to 80, with Habiba adding 18 runs in the final five balls through a boundary and a six.
India comfortably chased the target in 12.1 overs. Bangladesh’s leg-spinner Anisha Akter created a glimmer of hope by taking two quick wickets, reducing India to 22/2. However, Gongadi Trisha (58 off 45 balls) and captain Niki Prasad (22 off 15 balls) formed a match-winning partnership of 64 runs, taking the game away from Bangladesh.
