Football legend Lionel Messi is expected to take part in a unique crossover event this December, as reports suggest he will be stepping onto the cricket field alongside some of India’s biggest cricketing names. The exhibition match is slated to be held at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium on December 14.
Currently playing for Inter Miami in the United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS), Messi—best known for his storied career at FC Barcelona—could be seen playing a seven-a-side cricket match featuring Indian cricket greats such as Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.
According to The Indian Express, an established event management group has approached the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to book the venue for the much-anticipated event. “Messi will be at Wankhede on December 14. He’s likely to take part in a cricket match with present and former cricketers. The complete program will be announced once all details are finalized,” an MCA official reportedly said.
The football superstar is expected to tour India from December 13 to 15, with planned visits to New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata as part of a promotional campaign.
This marks Messi’s first trip to India in 14 years. He last visited in 2011, when Argentina played an international friendly against Venezuela at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. Argentina won that match 1-0, with Nicolás Otamendi netting the winner.
If confirmed, the December match would represent a rare moment in sports history—uniting global football royalty with Indian cricket legends in a celebration of cross-sport camaraderie.
