The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh has stated that it will seek the cooperation of international organizations to bring back British MP Tulip Siddiq, niece of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in compliance with court directives. Tulip, who lives in the UK, has been charged in a corruption case involving the misuse of state power to secure government plots through undue influence.
According to the ACC, Tulip is accused of facilitating the allotment of a government-leased plot in Gulshan to Eastern Housing in 2000 during her aunt’s tenure in power, allegedly receiving a flat in exchange. In 2022, she reportedly influenced the allotment of 10 kathas of land in Purbachal under RAJUK for her mother Sheikh Rehana and siblings. Following an investigation, a chargesheet was submitted in court, leading to an arrest warrant and a court summons for April 27.
ACC Director General Akhter Hossain emphasized that Tulip must present her statement regarding the allegations directly in court. When asked whether Interpol would be involved if she fails to appear, he said the ACC would act in line with court orders and work with international entities to bring her back if necessary.
Additionally, the ACC has filed a separate case against Salman F Rahman, chairman of Beximco Group, his son Sayem Sobhan, and 28 others. They are accused of acquiring land worth Tk 87 crore for just Tk 1,000 via bond transfers.
