The two-day program demanding the implementation of the Teesta River project and equitable water sharing begins today, Monday, under the banner of the Teesta River Protection Movement with the slogan “Jago Bahe – Save Teesta.” BNP and its allies will participate in the initiative.

A 48-hour continuous sit-in will be held along the riverbanks, aiming to pressure India to resolve the Teesta water-sharing dispute and other issues related to transboundary rivers while safeguarding Bangladesh’s interests.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will inaugurate the program near the Teesta Railway Bridge in Lalmonirhat today. On the final day, Tuesday, BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to deliver a concluding address.

The program will include gatherings at 11 locations across five northern districts—Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, and Nilphamari—with senior leaders from BNP and allied parties in attendance.

Organizers of the movement stated that the campaign would feature a march towards the Teesta River and a sit-in covering 230 kilometers along both banks. BNP’s standing committee members, including Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and others, along with leaders from allied parties like Jatiya Party’s Mustafa Jamal Haider and Ganasanghati Andolan’s Zonayed Saki, will be present at various locations.

Locals along the Teesta River have expressed renewed hope for a solution. Abdul Jabbar, a resident of Char Ichli village, said, “No one listens to our plight. The Hasina government only offers false promises, but we still don’t have Teesta water. We hope this movement finally brings us justice.”
