Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus praised the longstanding role of the Bangladesh Armed Forces in safeguarding the nation, contributing to development, and supporting state-building efforts.
While recalling how the armed forces consistently stand by citizens during emergencies, he urged them to take on a defining role in the upcoming national elections and the February referendum.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the National Defence Course (NDC) and Armed Forces War Course (AFWC) 2025 at the NDC in Mirpur Cantonment, he said he felt proud to witness the military’s progress and its steadfast dedication to national security and development.
Prof Yunus highlighted the forces’ active presence during natural disasters, political turmoil, and public health crises, noting that such service demonstrated their readiness and commitment to the welfare of the nation. He also commended their contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, which have strengthened Bangladesh’s reputation globally.
Looking ahead to February, he said the nation must work together to ensure that the elections and referendum become peaceful, inclusive, and historic. He called on the armed forces to help create a festive and safe environment for voters, saying that the country would remember their role with pride.
At the start of his speech, the chief adviser paid homage to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War and to all who sacrificed during the struggle for independence. He also honored those who gave their lives during the July Revolution, acknowledging their dreams for a new and just Bangladesh.
Turning to the health of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Prof Yunus urged the nation to pray for her recovery, noting that she is currently fighting for her life.
Congratulating the officers graduating from the NDC and AFWC, he described the accomplishment as a major milestone achieved through year-long dedication and effort. He said the graduates are now prepared to take on higher responsibilities with deeper knowledge of national security, policymaking, strategy, and development.
Reflecting on the vision behind the NDC, he said the institution was built to prepare leaders capable of navigating a shifting geopolitical environment. With Asia becoming an increasingly important economic hub, he noted that Bangladesh’s strategic location offers significant opportunities. Future leaders, he said, must harness this advantage to drive sustainable national progress.
Prof Yunus praised the structure of the two courses—one focused on strategic-level national security and leadership development, and the other on bridging strategic and operational military planning. He added that participants had engaged in extensive discussions on modern global challenges such as terrorism, climate threats and cyber risks.
