Bangladesh’s garment industry, which contributes a major portion to export earnings, continues to face ongoing challenges, including labor unrest and energy shortages. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently confirmed that 100 garment factories have shut down in the last six months, leaving 50,000 to 60,000 workers unemployed. At least 158 factories are struggling to pay wages. Industry owners have criticized the government for its uneven policies, focusing on larger factories while neglecting smaller ones. They also highlighted issues such as energy shortages, worker dissatisfaction, and banking instability affecting the sector. Azhar Khan, Chairman of Mithila Apparels, emphasized that consistent gas and electricity supply would reduce the crisis significantly. According to BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel, despite aid for large companies, smaller businesses are not receiving similar support. The overall condition of the sector is poor, with many factories closing and workers being laid off. As a result, buyers are shifting to other countries like Sri Lanka, India, and Pakistan, where exports are on the rise. Immediate action is required to address these challenges.
