Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has announced that party-backed candidates for upcoming local government elections will be selected at the local level rather than through centralized nominations.

Speaking to reporters on Monday after paying tribute at the graves of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Rizvi said the party intends to give greater responsibility to grassroots leaders in determining local election candidates.

According to Rizvi, the current government and party leadership are focused on serving the public, while BNP continues to face and overcome political challenges. He also praised Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, claiming his popularity has grown despite what he described as ongoing political obstacles.

The BNP leader noted that disciplinary action is being taken against individuals allegedly using the party’s name for personal gain. He stressed that the party remains committed to addressing such issues while strengthening its organizational structure nationwide.

When asked about the upcoming local government elections, Rizvi expressed optimism that the polls would be more orderly because party symbols will not be used. He added that local units of the party will play the key role in selecting and supporting candidates in their respective areas.
