The employees of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) have returned to work after suspending their strike. This follows a decision by the BSEC Officers’ Welfare Association to end their work stoppage. On Wednesday, BSEC staff had raised four demands related to the compulsory retirement of Executive Director Saiful Rahman, which led to a protest involving disruption of power and CCTV services and the locking of the office gate. The protest escalated when BSEC officials confined the Chairman, Khondokar Rashid Maksud, and three commissioners, resulting in their eventual rescue by law enforcement, during which several employees were injured. In response, the employees called for the resignation of the Chairman and commissioners, declaring a strike on Thursday. Despite the unrest, the Chairman and commissioners arrived at the office under heavy security, while the employees continued their strike. Subsequently, a case was filed against 16 BSEC employees in connection with the Wednesday incident. Following this, the staff decided to end their strike and resume regular duties. The BSEC Officers’ Welfare Association has urged staff to resume work to protect the interests and reputation of Bangladesh’s stock market. Meanwhile, leaders from major stock exchanges and brokerage firms have gathered for a meeting with the BSEC officials to discuss the situation. The meeting was ongoing at the time of reporting.
