Matthew Breetzke Shatters Records with Sensational 150 on ODI Debut

South African opener Matthew Breetzke delivered a stunning century in the tri-nation series held in Pakistan. The 26-year-old scored an impressive 150 runs on his ODI debut, becoming the first-ever player in ODI history to achieve a 150-run innings in his debut match. His 148-ball knock included 11 fours and five sixes, making him the 19th batter in history to score a century on ODI debut.
By achieving this feat, Breetzke broke a 47-year-old record. The first-ever century on an ODI debut was recorded in 1972, but it wasn’t until 1978 that West Indies’ DL Haynes came close to Breetzke’s milestone, scoring 148 runs against Australia. Since then, no debutant had managed to surpass the 130-run mark—until now. Breetzke also became the fourth South African batter to score a century on ODI debut, following in the footsteps of Colin Ingram, Temba Bavuma, and Reeza Hendricks.
Powered by Breetzke’s remarkable innings, South Africa posted a total of 304/4 while batting first against New Zealand. Jason Smith contributed 41 runs off 51 balls, while pace all-rounder Wiaan Mulder added 64 off 60 balls. Despite Breetzke’s explosive start, South Africa’s total was considered slightly below par, given the conditions at Lahore’s wicket.
