Speculation has been growing among millions of Bangladeshi cricket fans about the future of Shakib Al Hasan—will he return to the national team, retire, or continue solely in franchise leagues? The question finally drew a response from BCB’s Media Committee Chairman Iftikhar Alam Mithu, who stated that Shakib can still make a comeback through performance.

After correcting his bowling action, Shakib returned to professional cricket via the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where his team, Lahore Qalandars, recently won the title. Despite being part of the champion squad, Shakib didn’t feature in the final match.

Last year, due to political complications, Shakib missed what could have been his final home Test. He was also left out of the Champions Trophy squad following a ban related to his bowling action. Many believed that might mark the end of his international career.

However, defying expectations, Shakib made a surprising return shortly after his suspension ended. Though his PSL performance—three matches, no runs with the bat, and a few wickets with the ball—was underwhelming, his mere presence back on the field is seen as significant. Reports even suggest one match official raised fresh concerns about his bowling action.

While Shakib has already retired from international T20s, he remains eligible for ODIs and Tests. With Bangladesh gearing up for the next T20 World Cup and an ODI World Cup to follow, selectors may still consider him—if he proves his form and fitness. Yet, the decision may also hinge on the current relationship between Shakib and the cricket board.

Speaking at an event in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on May 26, Mithu addressed the question directly: “Of course, our relationship with Shakib hasn’t ended. This is his first tournament after correcting his action—let’s see how he progresses.”

He added, “One thing is clear—Shakib is a world-class player and a valuable asset for any team. Our team management and selectors always keep him in consideration. He needs a few more matches under his belt before a decision can be made.”
